Private Hire Insurance

Private hire insurance is a specialized type of motor insurance—often called “Hire and Reward” cover—designed for professional drivers whose vehicles must be pre-booked through an operator or app (such as Uber, Bolt, or a local minicab firm).

Unlike standard car insurance, which only covers personal use, this policy legally allows you to transport passengers in exchange for payment. It specifically excludes “plying for hire,” meaning you cannot pick up passengers who hail you on the street or wait at a taxi rank, as those activities require public hire insurance. Most policies also include Public Liability cover to protect against claims if a passenger is injured or their property is damaged while entering, exiting, or riding in your vehicle.
